It was nearly 2:30 a.m. when the call came in; there had been a rollover accident on an icy road. NMS Security was called to the scene. Temperatures had dropped to -25° F and the wind was blowing at about 20 mph, resulting in a wind chill of -55° F—the kind of weather that can make expediency the difference between life and death. The NMS Security officer arrived at the scene, assessed the situation and immediately called for an ambulance. After making the call, he made his way down a steep, snow-filled utility road to where the vehicle rested. First donning snow bibs and parka, the officer pressed through bone chilling cold to reach the over-turned vehicle. The driver had been injured. Paramedics were soon on the scene and removed the injured driver to a medical facility.

For the NMS Security officer, this was when the major work of the incident began. Despite the sub-zero temperatures, blowing snow and the pitch-black of night, the officer began to collect evidence. Taking pictures and measurements, with occasional stops to warm his fingers in the patrol vehicle, the evidence was collected and the vehicle removed. Several hours later, after removing the vehicle and ensuring there was no harm to the environment, the officer headed back to the squad room to make his report, providing both the client and NMS Security the detailed information needed to help deter future accidents.
